Secret Cinema...Tell no one...
17.02.11

I went to a 1940s themed Secret Cinema night recently and it was one of the most incredible themed experiences I have ever been to. You sign up via the website and get notified when the next screening is going to take place, in the lead up to it they email you with details of the theme and meeting point (not the exact location of the venue) and give you clues as to what the film could be. We turned up outside Wapping station into a 1940s time warp where everyone was dressed up and you're not sure who are actors and who are paying punters. They then gathered us together in a protest style procession and lead us to the warehouse which was an old tobacco dock which was completely decked out in 1940s themed shops, they had dance lessons, old fashioned fish and chips, they re-enacted scenes from the film and if you're  a real movie buff then you would have been able to guess what you're about to see. To our delight and surprise, once everyone was seated in the cinema room, they unveiled the film 'The Red Shoes' to a round of applause. Then it all became apparent how well thought through the evening was, right down to every last detail which was true to the movie. It was like walking into a theatre set, like no cinema experience I have ever been to. Magical and well worth signing up.

Animation on Toast

Check out the latest video by Ok Go to their new song called 'Last Leaf'. The band already have a fantastic reputation for creative visuals to their songs. They shot to fame back in 2006 when their 'Here it Goes Again' video was a Youtube sensation and showed them styling some complex synchronised dance moves across four treadmills. By no means an easy feat, it was a quirky take on quite a simple and low-budget idea and they really pulled it off. This latest video released today doesn't disappoint...

Surround Me...
30.09.10

From the 9th October this year until the 2nd January 2011 there will be a particularly sensual art installation going on within the square mile in the City of London.' Every day of the working week, the City of London is alive to the sounds of trade, commerce and  traffic. At the weekends, quiet descends on the offices, squares and streets of the City, broken only by the occasional sound of cars and the pealing of church bells'. Commissioned by  Artangel, artist Susan Philipsz has created a work call 'Surround Me' which presents a constellation of sound installations at various locations to echo the buzz and sometimes eery noises which a metropolitan and fast paced urban environment can create. Philipsz was nominated for the Turner Prize this year and is 'best known for playing recordings of herself singing over public address systems'.  Here is the link to the list of the locations in the city where the sound installations can be heard.

If this sounds like its up your street then try out this rather cool website which allows you to make wind chime music by using creating circles which sound when they touch eachother, be warned its very addictive.
Just remember you heard about it here first...

I went to France recently which is why it has been a bit quiet on the blogging front. Here are some snaps from my holiday which I thought I'd share with you...

All Things Original...
23.08.10

I have discovered the delightful work of Cassia Beck on the 'All Things Original website. Have a little look for yourself, I'm sure you'll find something you'll like http://www.allthingsoriginal.com/ . These lovely prints by Cassia Beck have been shot using a vintage camera and have evidence of little scratches and flecks on the surface of the lense which gives it such character and charm which you simply cannot create using a digital camera. The print measures 8x8 inches and has been printed on premium matt paper, for only £20 you can be the owner of one of your very own. What's more, if you buy 3 from the series you can choose another print for free!

Check out Cassia Beck's lovely blogspot page here: http://cassiab.blogspot.com/ and feast your eyes on all her fantastic photography which gives you an Ameliesque view of how she sees the world through the lense.

My Favourite Shop of the Week
03/08/10
Tucked away just off Brick Lane on Cheshire Street, Shelf has been my port of call for anything stationary related, gift ideas and for general browsing. I pass the shop every day on my walk to work and to celebrate the launch of my new blog I thought I would award it with being My Favourite Shop of the Week. Go alphabet happy with their collection of letters priced between £4-9, choose your own and mix and match the different sizes. What a lovely personalised present you can make! If you're a bit of a typography geek then this is the link for you...
I'm also a bit of a fan of their bumper vintage stationary gift pack which is full of all kinds of bits and bobs, cuttings, labels, images, notepads and pencils. This is perfect for someone who likes to get creative. The whole package is bundled up in brown paper and string and the contents in each one is a little bit different. They also do a great selection of prints, posters and paintings and there's even something for the kids too but don't just take my word for it...

During the summer the Photographers Gallery is hosting ten minute talks every Friday lunchtime 'by professionals and enthusiasts about a photo that means something to them'.

While you're there make sure you have a look at Sally Mann's new exhibition which is on until 19th September. Also have a nosey round their bookshop which is one of my favourite places to go and browse through the books, mags and cameras on sale. Located just off Oxford Street The Photographer's Gallery is a must for anyone who wants to spend half an hour respite from the manic high street.
